This is a bucket-list trip for many, and the star of the show -- onboard and ashore -- is Hawaii itself. Those looking for a late-night libation will have to head on over to Pink's Champagne Bar on Deck 6 (open until Midnight), or the bar within the Mardi Gras Lounge, which is open "until late". Norwegian Cruise Line has been slowly restarting its fleet stateside since Norwegian Encore became the company's first U.S.-homeported vessel to resume service last August. During my evening walkabouts around the ship, I've also noticed new LED-lighting fixtures in elevator banks and lobbies and new wall treatments. Say goodbye to those oversized prints of Hawaii and past Hawaiian ships (remember Pride of Aloha, anyone?), and hello to a décor that is decidedly upscale throughout. Enter Norwegian Cruise Line, which swooped in and bought up all materials related to the project in 2002 for its new Hawaiian venture.

This is a ship that, much like Hawaii itself, is fun, colorful, and steeped in tradition. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is a ship with a rich history that began long before it even set sail. It was originally ordered by American Classic Voyages under the codename, "Project America". American Classic Voyages had operated two classic ex-ocean liners pressed into Hawaiian service thanks to their U.S.-registry and drew up replacement plans for the aging vessels in 2000. When Pride of America cast off its lines on April 9, the ship carried just 50 percent of its total passenger capacity on its triumphant return to this slice of Paradise. Setting sail on Pride of America's first voyage back, Cruise Critic found a ship that has matured considerably since it first entered service -- one that can hold its own against the inherent charms of Hawaii itself.

This cruise makes a two-day port of call with the ship docked at the pier the whole time. Guests will have up to 35 hours to explore Maui, leaving at 5 PM the following day. On the second day, you can get up early and watch the sunrise on Haleakala or ride out to Molokini for a snorkeling tour and even see humpback whales from Jan to April. There are several specialty dining restaurants available on Pride of America. We also tried the Italian restaurant La Cucina which was pretty good. Another included option is the buffet which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There is a good bar selection on the Pride of America including pool bars, wine bars, and more. With the drink package included as part of Free at Sea, you’ll have the opportunity to try any drink you like, up to $15, which includes most beverages. We especially like the Mai Tai from the Aloha Lanai Bar. Pride of America launched in 2005 so it is a relatively old cruise ship. However, it has been refurbished several times including in 2022. The ship can accommodate up to 2,186 passengers and 950 crew.

The itinerary is excellent and the island destinations are fantastic. It’s a great way to see the four major islands in seven nights, though, as the itinerary is planned, there’s minimal sightseeing time for Oahu. NCL has done a nice job curating their menu of excursions to suit both the adventure seeker and the casual sightseer.
During the voyage, the vessel was a background for the day time TV show "Live with Regis and Kelly". Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa awarded their viewers with 1,000 free NCL cruises in a campaign before the show. Starting from the 16th of May they were giving 20 cruises to winners every day until the 10th of June. The restart of Pride of America, some eight months later, is no less important. The very fact that this is being written onboard this ship as we sail the (admittedly stormy) seas between Kahului and Hilo is nothing short of miraculous. Our Lyft driver in Lihue spoke of regretting sleeping in on Thursday morning; he wasn't aware Pride of America was coming back this week.
When planning your days in port, note that with the exception of Kona, the ship docks at ports that are short driving distances to any points of interest. This is a noticeable difference for passengers used to cruising in places like the Caribbean where most activities can be found immediately on shore. For this reason, it is advisable to organize shore activities in advance. Pride of America offers a plethora of exciting shore excursions for a fee (ziplining, kayaking, bus tours of Volcanoes National Park, luaus and more). Shore excursions are such a big deal on this ship that they often fill up before the ship leaves port the first day.
If you have limited funds for port activities and are not comfortable renting a car, prioritize booking excursions and tours in Maui and Hilo as there is nothing to do near the cruise terminals at those ports. You also won’t have as much time to enjoy your stateroom, drink and dining packages, the spa, and other ship activities.
I particularly love the chocolate chip bread pudding (covered in caramel sauce and vanilla soft serve) and the honey rice pudding. But depending on how much you plan on drinking, this is something to consider. While you might see people wearing beautiful leis at the airport in Honolulu and be tempted to purchase one, hold your horses (or your luggage in this case). You will receive a free fresh flower lei for women (pictured above) or a shell lei for men as you enter the cruise terminal. Guests who come in the day before, or leave the day after have a full day to explore the island. We hope you’ve allowed at least an extra day or two to explore Oahu either on the front end or the back end of the cruise. If you are on the Pride of America, the ship will make its way around Kauai to cruise by Kauai’s stunning Na Pali Coast. You will have some time, probably a couple of hours, from when you leave the dock to when you can see the Na Pali Coast. Check with guest relations for their estimated timing for that day.
The Gold Rush Saloon, for example, is a nice spot for those looking for a casual evening of beer drinking and listening to karaoke. On the other side of the spectrum, those who want a fancier evening (with posher drinks) can go to the Napa Wine Bar and Pink's Champagne Bar. There are bubblegum hues in Pink's Champagne Bar, for instance, and a riot of vivid bead-inspired colors in the Mardi Gras Cabaret Lounge & Nightclub.
Pride of America has 9 restaurants, including 2 main dining rooms, the no-charge Cadillac Diner and the casual buffet Aloha Cafe. Better make a reservation if you prefer dining at a specific time, at a certain venue. Wednesdays and Fridays are the busiest nights in all extra-fee restaurants; Sundays are the slowest.
The ship serves as a comfortable home base from which to explore Hawaii; a floating resort that just happens to move to a different location every other day. Sure, there are still whiffs of 2005 nostalgia onboard. The eye-popping colors of the shopping arcade on Deck 5 are still in full swing, and Norwegian's mid-2000 habit of painting clouds and blue sky on ceiling tiles in the buffet lives on.
